The Jackson Hives and Evan Dando : Nov 19, 11:47 AM

I forgot to mention that I went to another Jackson Hives show near the end of October. I did the usual 2+ hour drive to Wilmington, arriving at the SoapBox just after 9:00. I was there early enough to avoid cover, so I grabbed a magazine and took up a position on one of the well-worn sofas reminiscent of those your grandma had in the front room during her ”I’ve just got to get in touch with this new 70’s vibe” revelation she had in 1981 while you ignored her in favor of deciphering the meaning of ”vegemite” as Colin Hay sang on.

Mike introduced me to some girl from the Carolina Penguin radio station. Even though I can’t remember her name (sorry!), we talked for a few minutes while the opening band groaned on. At one point they slumped into a cover of ”Maggie May” that was so undecipherable (as if the original wasn’t bad enough) that we both asked simultaneously, ”What the hell is that?”. It was Jeremy’s birthday, so I felt bad about declining the invite to the after-party at his house. Miles to go before I sleep and all that, though.

This entry actually started life with a link to a great write-up on the Gram Parsons tribute album, but I suppose that thought has passed for the moment. Somehow this obscure work came up in my conversation with the chick from the Penguin. It was then that I realized (with some previous help from Josh Benton) that the selfish bashing Evan Dando received from the media and scene pimps needs to be addressed. I am an unabashed fan, and his latest outing ”Baby I’m Bored” isn’t to be missed.
